On 27 August 2024, UNITAR and Diplomats Without Borders held the second webinar in the peace and diplomacy discussion series, exploring the vital role of international cooperation in promoting peace and enhancing humanitarian action. This engaging event featured two distinguished speakers: Dr. Clem McCartney, an independent research consultant from Northern Ireland, and The Honorable Martin Kobler, a former career diplomat with extensive experience in international relations.
The discussion centered on the critical need to transform conflict for sustainable peace. Dr. McCartney highlighted the significant evolution of conflict resolution approaches since the 1980s, emphasizing the importance of holistic, needs-based solutions that involve all stakeholders in the peace process. He also pointed out the challenges faced in implementing comprehensive strategies, such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which aim to address multiple interconnected issues simultaneously.
In contrast, Martin Kobler focused on the current state of global affairs, expressing concern about the erosion of the international order and the weakening of the multilateral system. He stressed the urgent need to address the root causes of conflict, particularly the lack of social cohesion within societies. Kobler emphasized the importance of fostering strong social contracts in conflict-affected areas as a foundation for sustainable peace.
Together, the speakers underscored that the pursuit of sustainable peace is not merely an academic exercise but a vital matter that affects millions globally. Their insights provided a framework for understanding the complexities of conflict transformation, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach that goes beyond merely ending violence to heal communities and build resilient societies.
