The recent webinar hosted by Diplomats Without Borders (DWB), featuring Ambassador
Jorge Heine, offered an insightful examination of the shifting geopolitical landscape shaped
by the evolving dynamics among major global powers, with a particular focus on Latin
America. Drawing on his book "The Non-Aligned World: Striking Out in an Era of Great
Power Competition” (Polity Press, 2025), co-authored with Carlos Fortin and Carlos
Ominami, Ambassador Heine provided a thoughtful overview of the political developments
that have led to today’s changing global order, as well as his perspective on the diplomatic
strategies of Latin American countries, what he terms Active Non-Alignment, an approach that has now extended to the rest of the Global South.
The lively discussion that followed, marked by both points of agreement and constructive
challenges to Ambassador Heine’s views, created a valuable space for DWB members and
external participants to share reflections informed by their diverse experiences and expertise.
Thank you to Ambassador Jorge Heine for the intellectual stimulation on this increasingly
important topic, and to all participants who contributed to this timely and engaging
conversation.
